Conservation

1: the protection of plants and animals, natural areas, and interesting and important structures and buildings, especially from the damaging effects of human activity.

2: carefully using valuable natural substances that exist in limited amounts in order to make certain that they will be available for as long a time as possible.

In 1787, on a hot summer day in Philadelphia, the framers of the constitution agreed to the following basic principles: 

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

This constitution would be the framework to unite people to fight oppression, hatred, and slavery, and it established a government system to protect individual rights and the environment which they cherished.

On March 3, 1849, Congress created the United States Department of the Interior for the management and conservation of federal lands and its natural resources. Congress recognized early on the importance of establishing a dedicated branch of government to focus on protecting federal lands and ensuring biodiversity. As we look back on this decision, historians acclaim this as one of the greatest accomplishments of the federal government. It was an act of pure unselfishness to preserve a place where future generations have an opportunity to see the same beauty that the past generation before them so admired.

We must not forget the importance of conservation. 

In a capitalist society, the only means to create wealth is by exploitation of natural resources and wildlife. Corporations have drastically depleted the once abundant supply of Earth’s treasures from minerals, timber, sand, water, oil, and animals. This is evident in the logging of Alaska and the Amazon, the illegal mining of gold and sand in Africa, the oil fields of Texas, the agriculture fields of the Great Plains, the overfishing of oceans, and the livestock industry. To this very day, no for-profit corporation has ever existed solely to provide jobs for the purpose of conservation. Furthermore, these same exploiters like to use the Constitution as a weapon to say it gives them the power and freedom to take whatever resources they so choose, and the federal government should not interfere with those decisions. When in reality, the complete opposite is true. The United States of America was founded on the principles of equality, justice, tranquility, and posterity. Not corporate prosperity.  

We must once again seek to protect our natural resources and increase biodiversity because if we don’t, future generations will have nothing but a dystopian wasteland.
